Class Topics

During class we had the chance to analyze the film a little bit. We talked about different things that they showed in the film and we talked about in class. One of those is different socio-economic class which we saw a great deal in the movie. One of the ways we saw this was simply by what they wore in the movie. The higher class usually had very nice clothes on that were generally a lighter color. While the lower class usually had black on which we saw quite a bit with Johnny—black top, black pants, black leather jacket, black shades on. Also the way the different classes danced in the movie. The higher class danced to a lot slower less sexual music, while lower class was all like grinding and sexual dancing.

We also talked about the topic of abortion. In the movie Penny gets pregnant from Robbie. She originally thinks that they had something, but Robbie proves he just wanted some action. So Penny decides to get an abortion and Robbie agrees with this decision. When we talked about this in class we discussed about who should have the say to get an abortion. In a case like this where the two won’t stay together I think it should be Penny’s decision (even though abortion is illegal at this time). Due to the fact that she will be the one going through labor and Robbie really won’t be around and also he doesn’t want anyone to know about it.

One of the last topics of the movie we discussed in class was the part about coming of age and how dancing really shapes Baby into Frances. She comes into the summer camp as a daddy’s girl who is focused on helping the world and interested in her education, but before she knows it she is with a man-- that her dad does not approve of at first—and dancing really steps in and takes place of her education. I think this is a common theme where the “good girls” go after the “bad guys” in hopes to catch a thrill in a sense. I have also seen this in real life, but most of the time the ending is a lot different than the movie. In the movie Frances seems to change Johnny just as much as Johnny changes Frances. Johnny seems to be less of the kind of guy where he wants sex from all these different girls and Frances becomes more out-going and living for the day in a way. In real life what I have seen is the “good girl” starts taking on very bad roles such as drugs and forgets about her parent’s thoughts and cares about their boyfriend. While in the movie Frances’ dad takes on a liking to Johnny towards the end of the movie.

  1. Great Project, I completely agree with you when you talk about Penny and Robbie, He completely proved that all he wanted from her was in your words, "some action." I also agree that it all depends on the situation with regards of who should say who gets to have the abortion. Why should Robbie have any say in what Penny decides because obviously he didn't give a bit a darn about her. I also have to agree with you about Baby coming of age throughout this movie. The only thing I don't know if I agree with is your comment that dancing really steps in and takes the place of her education because they are there during the summer and she really didn't take off any time at school, That is if I am understanding it correctly! It is a common theme that the good girls seem to get pulled towards the bad boys, and it even happens now these days. Its just the way it happens in life. Usually there isn't such a happy ending like there was in the movie but then again that was Hollywood.

    1. Thank you, and I was saying that the dancing portion takes over from her studies at least during that trip that they take. To me, it looked as if she would have been off in a corner reading during the camp if she hadn't met Johnny because of how we see her in the beginning of the movie: with a book in her hand.

  2. My view of Baby is that when she came to the camp she had no idea what her sense of self was, clearly. I believe she led a life up till the camp that her father wanted for her. It appears everyone knew what Baby wanted and felt, but Baby. She finally had a say when decided to go off and explore the camp and without permission she went to the staff's house. She volunteered to be Johnny's dance partner, in order to prove Johnny wrong. Baby took control of the romance and led Johnny into having sex. Throughout the whole movie Baby initiates the course of their relationship except on the dance floor. Johnny has full control of the moves that take place on the floor. Baby pushes all the boundaries on her own to find herself and the kind of woman she wants to be.

    1. I agree that she lived a life that her father wanted her to have. We see throughout the movie that she really wants his approval and then finally with the abortion and also with being in a relationship with Johnny, she goes outside her comfort zone and goes against what her father wants. Then I agree with what you're saying about Baby taking control, I believe that she is that way because of this because of Johnny and dancing. Dancing is what first got her with Johnny, which then leads her to push and expand on who she really is.
